I don't want to give the wrong impression with this topic...

The vast majority of Filipinos would not even dream of eating dog meat.

And many, many dogs are lovingly and more than adequately cared for as family pets in the Philippines... The Canine Club of the Philippines also gives testament to a lively, knowledgeable, and dedicated dog-owners and breeders community in the country.


However, there is a cultural issue that I would like to address here...

It seems perfectly normal for the average Filipino to keep their pet dog tied-up on a short piece of chain or a bit of string for their entire lives. And taking your dog for a walk? ...In most cases, you would be considered to be quite mad, for wanting to do such a thing!!

I will never forget when I first started taking care of Shoubi, my adorable little Pit-bull terrier... When I first started walking her around the sub-division where I live, I used to get angry complaints from the neighbors because their dogs were getting excited and making a racket! I am very glad to say though, that after a few years of trying to set a good example - I no longer get the complaints and I can even occasionally see one or two of my neighbors out with their own dogs!!!)

So there is hope for dogs in the Philippines yet!

70 dogs intended to be sold as 'pulutan' in Baguio saved

Extracts from and article by Julie M. Aurelio that appeared in the Philippine Daily Inquirer, Friday, December 5, 2008 (page A26)

Over 70 poor dogs, cramped into an L300 van were rescued before dawn yesterday in Quezon City after a tipster informed police that the mutts were to be sold to dog meat lovers in Baguio City.

The animals, most of them weakend by the tight plastic strings which clamped their mouths shut, were turned over to an animal rights group based in Manila.

Insp. Angelo Nicolas, head of the Quezon City Police District's Anti Car-napping Unit, said he received a phone call from an animal rights advocate about the illegal transportation of animals...

The tip came from a certain Mel Alipio, the country representative for the Network for Animals.

"We were told that an L300 van was bound for Baguio, along EDSA and that it would be loaded with more-or-less 70 dogs," the police official said...

The police official identified the arrested driver and his helper as Ernesto Zapata, 44, a resident of Pulo dela Paz in Binan, Laguna and Jason Ortega, 30 and a resident of San Pedro, Laguna.

"The dogs were cramped into wooden cages and some of the animals could barely breathe because of the plastic strings arond their mouths," Nicolas noted.

Around 20 of the dogs were reportedly pregnant and weakened, he added.

Nicolas said the suspects claimed the dogs were from Laguna and were enroute to Baguio to be sold as dog meet to 'azucena' lovers.

Each dog can fetch a price ranging from P500 to P700

"The suspects had claimed that the man responsible for this is a certain Enrique Palanca, who has been arrested for the same offense before but is now out on bail," Nicolas said.

The dogs were brought to the Philippine Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in Quiapo, Manila, for safe-keeping and proper care.

Under the Animal Welfare act, Zapata and Ortega face six months to two years' imprisonment, or a fine of P1,000 to P5,000 per dog.

So:

Over seventy very lucky dogs - (But I just hope that at least some of them get re-housed before the PSPCA run out of space and resources to keep them...)

A couple of unlucky drivers - who should have known better... (The drivers will, no doubt, have a very hard time coming up with even P1,000 per dog...)

And a bastard dealer of live dogs - already out on bail having been charged with the same offense previously - who, presumably, the police can not even locate?

Some dogs have a great life in the Philippines and I am very happy for that!
I just want to do my little bit to raise awareness in the country, so that even more dogs can enjoy a good life here.

Good to hear that...I also heard about PAWS...

Philippine Animal Welfare Society, that was a nice organization that take good care of animals and their right...

That was one proof that in Philippine animal are well taking cared of...

Have to agree on this one. There are a lot of Philippine advocate groups for the welfare of the pets that take good care of the pets. I just hoped that people from all over the world would see that coming, not only on the bad side but on the good side as well.
